These developed out of steam tractors after the invention of the generator. Their main use was on village fairs where they helped to transport the various attractions like carousells, swings, Ferris wheels and organs from village to village. Once there they then produced the electricity needed to operate and light them. And as these machines had to be placed close to the attractions they were beautifully painted and decorated. Today the optical delight of a showmens-engine is the highlight of all steam fairs in Great Britain. A nightly LINE-UP of up to 100 working machines is an absolute must on the island.
